Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Holly Santana different from other trainers?

I am an experienced positive reinforcement trainer who takes into account your lifestyle, schedule and goals to create the best training plan for you and your dog.  I have over a decade of experience, covering many different aspects of training and behavior, and I’m CPDT (Certified Pet Dog Trainer) certified. CPDT certification requires many hours of ongoing educational events and a lengthy test to achieve certification. I always stay up to date on current training techniques to develop your best curriculum. In addition, my background in music means I’m a creative thinker who problem-solves to your benefit.  I am a full-time dog trainer and my only business is training your dog.

What is positive reinforcement training?

Positive reinforcement training uses rewards to reinforce good behavior, and ignores bad behavior.
It is the method of training endorsed by the Humane Society of the United States and a highly effective way to train. My positive reinforcement methods will strengthen the bond between you and your dog.  All family members can participate in this training, and any age dog benefits. Positive training does NOT mean that your dog will be allowed to perform bad behavior, though – all behavior has consequences. I find positive training produces the most stable and loving dogs, while still establishing rules and boundaries.

Will you come to my house?

I can schedule private sessions to come to your house to help you with your dog.  I live in Northern Westchester and service all of Westchester, parts of Putnam County, the Bronx and Manhattan.  Group classes take place in Yorktown and Mt. Kisco.

“Holly is fantastic: She’s knowledgeable, prompt, friendly, easy to talk to and work with, and my dog loved her (and listened to her) instantly. On the first lesson, we went through a ton: sit, stay, down, come, off, drop it — and did a lot of work on getting Jake not to use his terrier teeth. She gave us homework and a leave-behind with a lot of info. The puppy time out practice will eventually teach him! Second lesson we went out on the leash and talked about best practices and learned more commands (go to your place, leave it, wait). I highly recommend!”
